Wholetime Firefighters

Wholetime firefighting is a varied and interesting career, particularly as the government and the fire and rescue service begin to focus more on preventing fires and accidents and making community safety advice more readily available to the public. Currently around 10 percent of a wholetime firefighter's time is devoted to emergency work, with the rest divided between training, self-improvement and educational activities with the public. You will therefore need to have the self-discipline to use spare time purposefully and not to be under the impression the overwhelming part of your work is dedicated to firefighting.

To be a successful firefighter you need to be physically fit, articulate and confident with people in a wide range of situations.

Once you have completed your initial entry level training you will be able to prepare for promotion and to train in one of the many specialist roles, for example fire safety. For those who wish there are plenty of opportunities to work towards a senior management position in the fire and rescue service. where the rewards are excellent.
