All six teams complete mountain challenge
30 June 2008

All six teams from Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service have now successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge.

The final thee teams tackled the challenge last Thursday and Friday finishing in Snowdon early Friday evening.

Organised annually by The Fire Fighters Charity and the Fire Service Sports and Athletics Association, it's the biggest sporting event in the fire service calendar.

In order to complete it, teams have to climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales - Scafell Pike (978m), Ben Nevis (1,344m) and Snowdon (1,085m) - within 24 hours, raising as much money as possible for charity in the process.

The first three teams endured appalling weather on Ben Nevis and cold, damp and windy conditions on Scafell Pike, however were rewarded with a sunny ascent of Snowdon. The second three teams were not so lucky with wet weather on all of the mountains.

All teams were successful in completing the challenge within the 24 hour time limit, with one team achieving a gold medal for finishing within 20 hours. The other teams achieved three silver and two bronze medals between them.

The teams comprised both firefighters and support staff. Team members come from Aylesbury, Beaconsfield, Bletchley, Broughton and Great Holm Fire Stations and the organisation’s two offices in Aylesbury.
