Young drivers learn about road safety

30 October 2006

A no-nonsense road safety presentation for people aged between 15 and 24 has been developed by Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service and Buckinghamshire County Council’s Road Safety Team.

Called Learn & Live, it addresses issues such as speed, peer pressure, seatbelts and the use of mobile phones while driving. A series of extremely graphic road safety advertisements from other countries forms part of the presentation.

Novice drivers are over-represented in casualty statistics. Research shows that new drivers are more likely to have a crash within the first two years of passing their test, due to their inexperience. The Learn & Live presentation aims to make novice drivers and young people realise how vulnerable they are behind the wheel.

Keith Wheeler, a member of Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s Community Safety team, said: “Learn & Live pulls no punches at addressing this very important issue.

“Recent research reveals that material like this has the greatest impact on young people’s attitude towards safer driving. I hope schools will book the presentation and support us in promoting the message and hopefully saving lives’.

Valerie Letheren, Buckinghamshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transportation, said: “It is important for young drivers to be aware of how vulnerable they are in the first few years after passing their test. We will continue to raise the awareness of this very important issue by working closely with organisations like the fire service.”
