Crews prevent shop fire from spreading to flats

27 October 2010

Firefighters prevented a fire in a shop from spreading to the flats above it this morning.

Three crews from High Wycombe were called to Downley News and Convenience Stores in Littleworth Road at 5.30am.

Station Manager Doug Gruchy, the incident commander, said: “The fire started in the back of the shop, which is a double unit in a row of five. Firefighters were able to bring it under control before it could take hold of the two unoccupied flats above it.”

The shop was about 40 per cent damaged by fire. Smoke from the fire spread to adjacent units and the flats above.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel and a jet to put out the fire and a powerful fan to clear the smoke.

The stop message was sent at 7.20am. Firefighters will be returning to the scene later this morning to carry out a reinspection.
