A three-year plan outlining how Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service will live up to the pledge that it is “making you safer” has been published today.

Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Fire Authority's Integrated Risk Management Plan for 2009-2012 sets out to:

  • Identify who or what is most at risk of fire and other emergencies

  • Determine where they are and how best to reach them

  • Identify the best way to reduce and manage the risk

  • Ensure resources are deployed in proportion to the magnitude of the risks

The plan highlights measures designed to prevent emergency incidents from happening in the first place, protect the public from the effects of incidents should they occur and respond effectively when people call 999.

Special emphasis is given to initiatives designed to help vulnerable members of the community, including elderly people and young drivers, and Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service's work with other organisations to reduce fire-related crime and anti-social behaviour.

Chief Fire Officer Damian Smith said: “We are targeting the areas of greatest risk and tackling the real dangers that threaten to kill or injure people – or are already doing so.

“This important document looks in detail at risks and trends and identifies how and where we can make the biggest difference to people's safety.”

A 20-page summary has also been produced to help make the plan even more accessible to a larger number of people.

Consultation took place between 27 October 2008 and 21 January 2009 and the plan was approved by Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Fire Authority at its meeting on 13 February. A summary of the feedback is available here.
