'Reward' money funds new safety jobs

25 March 2009

A government reward for a campaign to drive down the number of deliberate fires in Buckinghamshire is being pumped straight back into community safety work.

Seven new jobs have been created at Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service to help make people safer through measures including increasing the number of safety checks carried out in homes and doing more work to steer young people away from becoming involved in fire-related crime. Six are two-year fixed-term contracts and four are currently being advertised.

The Department for Communities and Local Government is providing £227,000 over the next two years following the success of joint work involving all county’s emergency and heath services and councils.

The number of deliberate fires in Buckinghamshire more than halved between 2004 and 2008, from 1,998 to 857, as a result of initiatives including community clear-up days, education and youth diversion programmes, improved investigation and detection methods and better security measures.
