Broughton Fire Station’s annual community safety open day takes place on Sunday 19 July from 1pm to 4pm.

The station - runner-up in the Fire Station of the Year category in this year's national Spirit of Fire Awards - has lined up a whole host of attractions, including a fire safety competition that will involve a real fire.

Station Manager Geoff Bottle said: “We are building a special room containing a number of examples of fire hazards, and we will be staging a bedroom fire display in it.

“Visitors will be able to walk around the room before we set fire to it and identify the dangers, with the chance of winning a prize.”

There will also be funfair rides, trampolines, face-painting, pony rides and refreshments as well as a barbecue – and firefighters will be announcing the winners of their first fire safety poster competition for local schools.

Other attractions include:

  • The Firefighter Experience –a mobile community safety activity centre for children.

  • The Community Safety Exhibition Unit – a vehicle displaying fire safety leaflets and information.

  • A road safety demonstration in which firefighters will show how they release people who are trapped in vehicles following a crash.

  • A demonstration showing how NOT to tackle a hot pan fire.

  • A dunk tank, plus water safety advice provided by the water rescue unit based at Newport Pagnell Fire Station.

  • Fire appliances from Broughton and other fire stations in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.

The open day is being held to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides assistance to serving and retired fire and rescue service staff, their families and dependants. Last year's open day raised £2,500.

The date coincides with this year’s “Big Lunch” – a national celebration of the shared enjoyment of eating, laughing and socialising. For more details about the Big Lunch, visit www.thebiglunch.com

Firefighter Richard Allman, organiser of the open day, said: "We are aiming to pass on a variety of important safety messages to the community, as well as giving everyone an enjoyable afternoon out.”

He added: “We would like to ask everyone who comes to the open day to park considerately as we do not want our event to inconvenience residents in Middleton who live near the fire station.

“It will be a great afternoon out, so please let your family and friends know. Entry is free and we look forward to welcoming you on the day.”
