Firefighters worked for more than 90 minutes to free a 29-year-old horse trapped on its side under a fence this morning.

The horse, called Duchess, apparently fell after stumbling on a collapsed rabbit warren in a field off Chequers Lane, Cadmore End.

Two crews from High Wycombe released her after removing the fence and nearby vegetation, digging the ground level with shovels and raising her back end so that they could support it with straw.

Eight firefighters and the owner used their combined strength to help Duchess to her feet and she was checked over by a veterinary surgeon.

Watch Manager Andy Ward from High Wycombe Fire Station said: "Access was a problem as we had to carry our equipment for 10 minutes across fields to reach her.

"After removing the fence and clearing an area around her, we were able to push straw under her back end as it was about two feet lower than the rest of her."

Station Manager John Bull said: "They came up with a good plan and did an excellent job."
