Work to improve facilities at Great Missenden Fire Station is due to start next month.

The station is to be extended and refurbished at a cost of around £200,000 to provide better washing, toilet, kit room, kitchen and meeting room facilities.

Station Manager Roy Hocking said: “The station has hardly been changed since it was built in 1942 and desperately needs to be brought up to modern-day standards.

“These much-needed improvements will make the building fit for purpose both for the firefighters and the community they serve.”

Work will start in the week beginning 15 June, and is expected to be completed by the end of October. It will comprise a brick-built single-storey extension, along with refurbishment of the existing accommodation.

Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s Property, Procurement and Transport department and contactors Jet Construction (Milton Keynes) Ltd have planned the work so that it won’t disrupt village life.

Building supply vehicles will only access the High Street site from the London Road end, and vehicle movements will be kept to a minimum during peak drop-off and pick-up times at nearby Misbourne School.

The village’s fire engine will remain in service at the fire station while the work is carried out.
