Come and see us at High Wycombe!

23 June 2008

Come and see us at this Saturday’s Wycombe Community Festival! It takes place at Bucks New University’s Wellesbourne Campus between 12 noon and 6pm, and is raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Alongside the festival attractions, representatives of Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s community safety team will be talking to people about fire safety and coordinating a display by young people from the Marlow and Lane End Youth Crew, who have just this week finished a six-week course in which they learnt what it’s like to be a member of the emergency services.

Our fire investigation dog handler Kerry Burns and the ever-popular Barney will be demonstrating their arson detection skills, and the team will be presenting the trophy and medals to winners and participants of the Action for Youth football tournament for teenagers.

Jo Oliver, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s community safety partnership manager for Wycombe District, said: “This is the only outdoor community event of its kind in High Wycombe, and offers our organisation a unique opportunity to develop our links with people of all ages from different backgrounds and faiths.

“The event itself aims to embrace the diverse range of cultures in the area, and help build community cohesion.

"It is a real privilege that the event’s organisers are donating the proceeds to our service’s national charity.”

A number of local community organisations will be taking part in the festival, including Wycombe Steel Orchestra, and participants from the Wycombe’s Got Talent competition. There will also be guest dancers and musicians, art exhibitions and a procession around the campus.

Other activities will include a football tournament for 13- to 19-year-olds, face painting, children's craft and a bouncy castle.

Entrance is free, but charges for food and refreshments will help towards the total proceeds raised for The Firefighters Charity.

Catering will include Caribbean cuisine, Polish food, Indian food, a Halal barbecue, cream teas and a licensed bar.
