Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging schools, youth clubs and other local organisations to play an active part in Child Safety Week, which starts on 23 June.

The week is organised annually by the Child Accident Prevention Trust - a national charity committed to reducing the number of children and young people who are killed, disabled or seriously injured as a result of accidents.

Terry Ridgley, head of Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s community safety team, said: “The aim is to alert parents, children and young people – and all those who work with them – to the main causes of serious childhood accidents and how to stop them happening.

“This year’s theme is ‘Make a change - make a difference’. Even small changes in our everyday lives can make big differences to children’s safety.”

Terry’s team is happy to provide fire safety and road safety quizzes, worksheets and other resources to schools, youth clubs, Neighbourhood Action Groups and other organisations working with children, and to help with specific activities planned in support of Child Safety Week.

Resources and leaflets are also available from the Child Accident Prevention Trust website at http://www.capt.org.uk/home.htm

Examples of how to get involved include:

  • Displaying a poster promoting Child Safety Week

  • Tackling parking or speeding outside schools or in residential areas

  • Input to children about road safety

  • Input to children about burns and scalds

  • Raising awareness of fire safety and other safety issues within the home

  • Raising awareness of accident prevention within the home, including hazardous materials and slips, trips and falls

  • Raising awareness of how to deal with emergencies in the home, such as someone choking

  • Raising awareness of safety on the streets

  • Input to children about anti-social behaviour and crime
