Quick-thinking neighbours probably helped saved the life of an elderly man whose house caught fire on Sunday afternoon.
At 3.55pm crews from High Wycombe Fire Station were called to an address in New Road, Sands, after a neighbour noticed smoke coming from the house. While they were on their way two other witnesses made 999 calls.
Station Officer Andy Gosling, White Watch Commander at High Wycombe Fire Station, said: "When we arrived the house was full of smoke and it was apparent that there was a fire in the front ground floor of the house. A neighbour told us that the owner was still inside."
A smoke alarm was sounding but the owner was unable to get out on his own.
Station Officer Gosling continued: "Two rescue crews wearing breathing apparatus went into the building, where they found the owner and were able to carry him to safety. Once outside, firefighters administered oxygen and first aid while other crew members put out the fire and carried out smoke clearance."
The owner - a man in his 80s - was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from heavy smoke inhalation. Police helped control the traffic while Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service used high tech thermal cameras to locate any remaining hotspots.
Station Officer Gosling praised the members of the public who phoned in the fire. He said: "A few more minutes and the outcome could have been different. We were able to carry out an effective rescue thanks to the observance of the public."
He added: "A house fitted with working smoke detectors - and people acting on them - gives us a much better chance of saving lives."
Station Officer Gosling has been in touch with the hospital and White Watch now hope the man will make a complete recovery.
