The station, which was officialy opened on 1 December 1989, has a complement of three fire engines. It covers a wide area from Stony Stratford in the north to Furzton in the south. The station also covers Central Milton Keynes and provides back-up fire engines to Bletchley.

Staff at Great Holm are actively involved in a range of Community Safety initiatives, including the Citischool project and Home Fire Risk Assessments. The station also takes part in road safety initiatives such its involvement with the Milton Keynes Cruise.

A “hot” fire training facility has been developed at the station. This not only helps train its own firefighters, but also those from other stations within Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. The facility is also used to educate the community on how accidental fires occur and how they can be avoided.
