Smoke alarms save lives

The good news:

Most people have smoke alarms in their homes. (Click on the hand above if you don't).

The bad news:

Most people don't carry out a weekly check to make sure their smoke alarms are working. If your smoke alarms aren't working, they're no use at all!

That means there‚Äôs a quick and simple job you can do at home every week that could make a huge difference to the safety of your family. We want you to be the person who reminds the grown-ups to test the smoke alarms!

Think of the best time to do it, ideally at the same time and on the same day every week. That way it will become a habit.

Here are some times you could choose:

  • Straight after breakfast on a Saturday.

  • Just before lunch on a Sunday.

  • The same day as the refuse and recycling collection, immediately after everything has been put outside.

Can you think of some better times? We bet you can! If you are old enough and tall enough, volunteer to be the person who tests the alarms. All you have to do is push the "test" button. If the smoke alarm is working, it will beep to let you know.
